The building occupied a landscaped area of the campus which rises up to the existing 1960Ãs multi-storey teaching block. Significant excavation into the raised ground was necessary to accommodate the lower ground floor. Retaining walls were constructed in close proximity to the existing building necessitating a thorough understanding of the existing foundation / building construction to ensure stability.
The building utilises a braced steel frame which supports precast concrete plank floors. The planks tied into the steel to address disproportional collapse criteria. The large areas of glazing were supported from secondary steel with a structural frame inner leaf to the brickwork.
